News \ Nintendo Pressures Japanese Retailers to Discontinue R4

Many retailers in the Akihabara district in Tokyo are known for stocking the popular R4 flash card device for the Nintendo DS. The device allows gamers to play homebrew games, movies and music as well as illegally downloaded commercial roms (games) on their Nintendo DS.

Various retailers in the district, including online stores, stock the device but it looks as if this will no longer be the case if Nintendo has anything to do with it. The extent of what Nintendo were demanding is unclear but it is most likely that they threatened to no longer sell their products to the retailers if they continue to stock the R4.

Nintendo would be aware that there are many other devices out there that allow people to play games illegally on the DS and now with online stores it is possible to order something from anywhere on the planet. The R4 is also used as a music device, movie player and to play homebrew games which everyone is entitled to do. In the end at least Nintendo are doing something to try and fight game piracy but they must know this is a battle they cannot win.

Ninty needs to use the commercial success of the R4 as free market research. It's obvious that a lot of people want to utilise the systems potential.

I have an R4 which I use it to play tunes, chat (DS Organise is awesome by the way) and to run homebrew apps. I don't play dodgy/illegal games with it because I'm having way too much fun reliving my teenage years with Doom II and Lemmings.

What they exactly did wasn't released but they did have some words with the retailers related to the stocking the R4.
