I have 2004 too. I'll play you sometime. I managed to play on my old computer with lowest setting on everything using ~700MHz, 600MB RAM, 32MB Graphics.

You should be able to play smoothly on a medium-high setting. From experience, UT is much more optimized than Halo. My current comp is

2.4GHz Intel C2D
2GB RAM
256 Graphics

and i can play smoothly without any jumps (except server lag) with Full Settings.

Although, if i get a Macbook, would I be able to play these games? Because I wanna get one for schoolwork etc when i have enough. And also if Kevin Rudd keeps his promise

Rudd's Promise was not as everyone thinks. He said that the money would go to the school's IT, and it's up to the school whether they want to spend it on constant upgrading of computers, or personal laptops. Naturally, most schools go for option one.

Also, now is the best time to buy a MacBook as they have just received a hardware update, And you get nothing but quality. Plus they should be able to play UT04. I was lucky enough to get a Mac version from Amazon for Christmas, so i don't need any virtualization.

The only mac capable of playing Crysis is a MccPro iirc

Laptops are simply no good for cutting-edge PC gaming. Desktop computers are more future-proof.

If you do decide to buy a desktop PC, don't splash out on a graphics card yet. NVIDIA is soon to release its 9000-series at a price catering to the great unwashed masses in an attempt to revitalise the PC gaming industry (US$150-250 last I heard).

I'd have to agree with you on that
but I want the Laptop for schoolworking as well and Mac seems like the smart choice. Plus I'm happy with the a Laptop as a gaming computer because I'm not a hardcore gamer. Just a little over casual

The most replayable games are strategy games, I find. In the realm of turn-based 4X games, Civilization 4 is great and so is Galactic Civilizations 2 (no relation).

Since I started playing real-time tactics games like Company of Heroes, Homeworld and Ground Control I've been unable to play more traditional RTS fare like Command and Conquer and Starcraft — such games feel 'dumb' because they boil down to numerical superiority without the many other variables involved in battle like cover, fire superiority, morale, close support etc. Faces of War is a very good real-time-tactics game that can be had for cheap now (I got my copy for $15 just a week ago) but unless you patch it (53MBs total) you'll get mysterious slowdown. One traditional RTS I do like is Supreme Commander.

For shooters, Orange Box, Bioshock, Call of Duty 1, 2 and 4, and the Unreal Anthology are necessary purchases. The things that STALKER gets right overshadow its few bugs. FEAR and its expansions are epic. If you like having your ass handed to you, pick up the Advanced Warfighter series (which is arcadey) or Operation Flashpoint and Armed Assault (which are actually used in modified form to train real-world infantry).

For RPGs, I liked Morrowind much more than Oblivion, for reasons that escape even me. The Fallout series is must-play.

I don't enjoy playing basically any games on console honestly (you can see that my favourite genres are FPS and RTS, which consoles had trouble with in the past, and to an extent still do), but it is probably just because I like to be able to tinker with things and the myriad settings on your average PC game excite me with possibilities.

That and fanboyism.

I plyed Fear on 360 at my friends place last night. I wasn't too impressed with it. It had Xbox like graphics and pretty bad textures. Along with a little sloppy controls I just didn't like it at all.

Hows Age of Mythology?
And how big is Morrowind and Oblivion. My friends goes on about Oblivion but not much talk about Morrowind...
