So correlation barely exists because the MUSICAL side of GH doesn't exist. And when you mean musical side, you mean strings and finger strumming and articulation. That's just to summarise your point.
If I was a game developer (which I did for 3 semesters but wasn't my major), I wouldn't be marketing a guitar game with strings or a horizontal stave (or whatever you'd like to call it). A majority of gamers would reject it as being too hard (as you cleverly pointed out) to play and they'd rather pick up a real guitar. But, I would design the game as close to the real thing as possible and make it as playable as possible.
So to replace the strings you got a piece of plastic.
And to strum ... well you have that piece of plastic.
Notes, staves ... you're reading something at least.
Articulation, not so much. But let's keep the finer aspects aside. It's not a music lesson.
If you know how to play the guitar, of course you're going to criticise it for not being accurate. What guitar player wouldn't?
To put it simply, you ARE pretending to play a guitar. I never suggested that you were learning how to.

what is up with this game. its pressing the buttons and scratching the screen on your ds. whats the point, just go and learn to play the guitar and then it will be you playing the music not your ds.

Didn't you read my goddamn preview
I haven't god the final production copy yet but the fret grip rocked when i 'saw' it in action. I might touch base with Activision tomorrow to see if they mind me writing an article on just how much I 'saw'
But safe to say after 'seeing' it at some length, it plays like a dream... I mean... I saw it playing like a dream >_> <_<
Anyway
On story mode, I gather its pretty much the same, battle mode is the one to look for. Some very cool stuff in there
