The R4DS is well known among gamers, but not so big among the general public.
For a small price you can grab an R4DS or any other similar flash cart plus a memory card and you have your self a plethora of options and features not offered from Nintendo, now these flash cart units aren’t available at your local games shop and are rarely mentioned in mainstream media so it was a surprise to find an article published on TIMESONLINE which is Online version of the UK Times news paper.
In short the article refers to the R4DS as ”the ultimate video game piracy tool” and has the potential to hit Nintendo hard financially due to it’s ease of use, the Times even went out and purchased their own R4DS as an experiment and claimed that they had set the unit up, and illegally downloaded 10 new release games within less than an hour. Also mentioned was how the R4DS was being sold in Tokyo shops with little to no description on what the unit is used for, with signs up saying 'You know what it does, no questions will be answered.' Some shop owners are even directing customers to YouTube.com for instructional videos to avoid any legal complications.
Nintendo has been wanting to squash these for sometime, as they're becoming a more prominent issue everyday, especially considering their legal status in Japan.
Now we all know what a flash cart is capable of and it’s up to the individual what they decide to do with it once purchased, the article has focused their attention firmly on the illegal download side of things, and almost totally ignoring the entire homebrew scene, the only mention homebrew got was when Times vaigly referred to it as ” other unofficial software”. There’s a lot more to a R4DS than just a pirate tool and it would have been nice to have that acknowledged.
