Late last week Nintendo of America's George Harrison spent a bit of time talking about the lack western developed Nintendo games, saying that there are currently no plans to ramp up game development in the US.
"I'm not aware of any plans to push for more software
development here in the U.S.," said Harrison, "The actual decision about producing more software and who should do it
is driven by Satoru Iwata and the management team, including Mr. Miyamoto,
in Japan."
Recently the only western developed Nintendo title we've seen for the Wii is Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, a first person shooter developed exclusively for the western markets. Even though the the title was developed by Austin, Texas' Retro Studios, production was still overseen from Nintendo's Kyoto headquarters.
Beyond that we've seen Mario Strikers Charged Football, and Project HAMMER which is now officially on hold. History to date though, Nintendo has never had much success moving into western game development. In the Game Cube's heyday, Nintendo went to Exile Entertainment to develop
Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball, which sunk into development hell speculated to be due to quality issues. We also saw Geist, created in Florida and actually made it out the door and on to shelves only to be panned by critics.
Harrison offered the opinion that going through western third party publishers for content was a better idea.
"They're doing a great job both on DS and on Wii. They tend to provide
product in categories that we aren't particularly good at doing, like
sports or other genres. And since they're Western publishers, they tend
to be more in tune with Western tastes."
