Diddy Kong Racing DS - 8/10
Diddy Kong Racing on the nintendo 64 was one of my favouirt N64 games i owned. Sadly it isn't the same game i was hoping for, but still delevers entertainment.
What the game does the same is the levels, all the levels are the same as the original, and in some levels certain features have been removed which lowers the difficulty of the game. There are 4 races in 4 different domains, a boss, a trophy race, which is now a time attack race instead of the way it used to me, collecting items during the race and trying to come first at the same time. Once you have done this your able to challenge Wizpig, but thats not the end of the game, i wont spoil what to do after that because when it happens you'll be spun out, its cool.
In the original, once you completed the race and defeated the boss for that section you needed to beat the races again with added difficulty, now in the second race you float around the track popping ballons with the stylest and collecting coins, which i didn't enjoy considering i was expecting the same as last time. It makes great use of the stylest and the Nintendo Ds features though.
They also changed the game to try and involve the Nintendo Ds features into the game. In the old game simply timing accelerate between "Get Ready" & "Go" initiated a boost off the line. Now With The car you use the stylest to rotate the wheel on the lower screen to charge a boost start, the plane spin the fan to charge the boost and blow into the mic to charge the boost for the hovercraft.
The controls are simple to use. D pad for steering, A accellerate, B brake, R Sharp turn, L used to fire weapon or hoot your horn. The vehicles perform as well as the N64 version...except the hovercraft. Its handling is beyond shocking, with no responce at all compared to its previous self. The old one was hard enough and bounced and was tricky, but the new hovercraft isn't tricky, its down right impossible. Your going to need alot of patience and practise to be able to use it properly.
I haven't mad a chance to use the multiplayer mode yet but i imagine it would run just as well as mario cart or other racing multiplayer games.
All and all it retains its original good game features and characters, music is great and the same as the pervious one. Graphics are great for the DS and its an enjoyable racing game.
I would suggest if you want more of a challenging game this game might not be for you, but if you havent played the original then i suggest you experence this game.
All in all i give it 8/10
The previous I would give 10/10 on the N64
But dodge hovercraft control and minor changed features detract from game difficulty.
