Diddy Kong Racing DS - 6/10

We had our first visit from Diddy Kong and his racing friends on the now classic, Nintendo 64. Diddy Kong Racing was well recieved even through it was obvious Nintendo was trying to capitalize off of Mario Karts success. Now we have the Nintendo DS version and it seems its not a new version rather an updated port.

They have added a bunch of characters like Dixie Kong, Tiny Kong, Wizpig and Taj. Banjo and Conker have been cut due to rare being in with Microsoft.

The adventure mode is the main mode in Diddy Kong Racing. In this one-player game you progress through a story and visit four different worlds. I found this mode fun at first then I quickly got bored of it.

I found the controls to be very awkward in Diddy Kong Racing when it came to controlling the plane and magic carpet. On the other side the hovercraft and go-cart work like a dream. The controls also have a conflict when you start a race. The beginning of a race will give you a chance to boost your starting speed by quickly rubbing the touch screen. The problem is, as soon as the race starts you have to drop your stylus and head for the buttons. There isn’t enough time to properly handle both touch screen and buttons unless you use your finger as the stylus. It may sound like a good idea and at first it is a good and fun idea. But after you have done it, god its a pain!

You can play Diddy Kong Racing online via Wi-Fi connection. You will find this a more exciting experience then any other part of the game. Rather then playing against the computer, human opponents are more fun.

If you are expecting Diddy Kong Racing just like the N64 or a Mario Kart killer then stay away, stay far away!!. If your just after a fun racing game with online mode and you are bored of racing karts then try this game. Its not worth the $50-60, but if you can pick it up for under the $40 mark, the it wouldnt be a bad buy.
