WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 - 7/10
Back in the good old N64 day, real wrestling games were made. And the leading company was THQ with there WCW Vs NWO & WWE No Mercy etc games. Now its time to see how Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 shapes up against something from the old skool land.
THQ went with a completely different choice, using literally no buttons on the Nintendo DS and instead opting for a full touch-based experience. Rather than navigating your wrester around the ring via d-pad, all movement is handled automatically in what will initially feel like a turn-based wrestling experience.
At any given time the touch screen will show the two Wrestlers standing face to face, as well as three touch icons attached to various parts of the wrestler's body. Tap an icon and you'll initiate a touch-based move. These can be as simple as dragging a hand back to begin a punch, or as complex as pulling an arm backwards, then forward, and then creating tiny circle-motion to wrench up an opponent in a headlock.
The stylus movements are simple. Some actions require one swipe in one direction, while others respond to tapping and spinning.
The graphics are great for the DS, and the roster of fighters is a decent selection from SmackDown, Raw and even the ECW. The game's modes are varied and the presentation is smooth. Despite the small use of the second screen, the experience just feels great for any wrestling fan.
The game real main mode is Season - a game mode that acts as the career mode found in past WWE titles. Season mode allows you to pick from the short list of Superstars that range from John Cena to The Undertaker.
The soundtrack is minimal and it tends to repeat itself throughout the game but if your into it, you wont notice too much.
The only downfall I found about this game, there is no online mode, which would have pushed my ratting to a 9 - 9.5. But we cant have everything, wait what am I saying. I wanted this feature and I bet a lot of other people did too. Bad idea not putting it in THQ!!!
WE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 is a fun and interesting wrestling game if you give the touch controls a chance. As far as it goes for Old Skool N64 THQ games Vs this THQ game. The N64 games win hands down, no questions.
