News \ Nintendo Confirm 96 Million DS's Have Been Shipped

Nintendo has confirmed it's total Wii and Nintendo DS sales to date. Since it's launch in November 2006 (December in Australia) the Wii has shipped a staggering 45 million units worldwide, one million of which have found an Aussie home. Nintendo also noted that they have sold 312 million Wii discs along with those consoles. Meanwhile the Nintendo DS is still going strong having currently sold 96 million units worldwide. The also revealed that they have published 533 Nintendo DS cartridges, not that anyone is counting.

In terms of specific games Ninty were very pleased with the global success of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii, selling 14 million and 13.67 million units respectively.

To conclude the big N left us with a nice little statement about their goals for 2009. "Nintendo will continue to pursue expansion of the gaming audience and provide products that offer unique entertainment that puts smiles on the faces of people of all ages and genders."

Yeah, and the silly thing is that I'll still buy one.

I did read an interview with a Nintendo R&D project manager discussing reduction in power consumption to get GameCube processors (CPU and GPU) running off batteries. Which kinda follows the pattern when you consider that (in terms of approximate processing ability)

GameBoy = NES
GBA = SNES
DS = N64
The next hand held = GameCube

Maybe we'll have something to report by 2011?

between my family and my sisters family we have bought 8 ds's. 2 phats and 6 lites. Its very popular with young and old, our ds's are used very often by everyone from 5yo to 65yo. How many past consoles/handhelds can claim that? Well done nintendo.

DS's are fo people of all ages to play, same as the wii.
And many people have one so everyone are probably influenced to buy one.
