News \ Nintendo Warned of DS market Crash

Nintendo Headed for DS market Crash

Street Fighter II creator, Yoshiki Okamoto, has spoken of the dominance of the Nintendo DS and has warned Nintendo that they could be heading for a ‘crash of epic proportions’, similar to the market crash that Atari suffered and never recovered from.

The problem rests in Nintendo’s first party software domination across the Nintendo DS and the Wii. Okamoto says "looking at the way things are right now, it is a fact that first-party Wii games are the only titles selling well. But if the first-party titles are selling, third-party games should be able to sell too, so long as their creators have a good working relationship with Nintendo. I think the problem is a lack of understanding between third-party developers, like us, and Nintendo, and this relationship needs to improve for the games to improve. "

Okamoto is disappointed with the flow of low quality titles hitting the Nintendo DS and the many imitation titles, such as the copy-cat versions of Brain Training, that are polluting our gaming collections.

"All sorts of companies that have never made games before are getting involved. I mean, the cost of development is really next to nothing. And what about this flood of 'brain training' games? Can they really keep that up?” Gamers have been seeing an extremely high number of ‘non-games’ of late, which has turned into a new genre itself. Titles such as ‘Parent Training and Cooking Training’ have all followed in the ways of Brain Training in the hope of riding it’s success but according to Okamoto these will lead to Nintendo’s downfall.

Actually, Matt makes an excellent point there. Continual amp-ups in visuals isn't going to work forever and this trend of one original game coming out followed by a billion clones of it is going to spread out the industry too far and eventually cause it to collapse. This is a situation where only our friend time will be able to allow us to see the rest of it.

Nintendo themselves make good games, it's the third party games that are below par that are dragging them down, no matter how hard they try Nintendo can't seem to get good third party games.

I can kind of see where this article is coming from, though. People fall for the 'copycat' games and buy a couple of rubbish titles. They then become a bit bored and disenchanted with their DS, thinking that it is crap, with crap games. So, they go buy a PSP with a new, pretty action game and they fall in love with Sony and swear off Nintendo for life.

I don't think the above example would really happen with great enough frequency to totally destroy Nintendo, though. I just can't see it.

Maybe Okamoto wants more money?

Nintendo is still a bit all over the place, I mean the Wii was an unexpected hit in terms of numbers, so everything is a tad loose. I won't be surprised if they crash again.

with arcades declining, the home game market is and should remain king... and i see nintendo leading the market... just my two cents.
