WarioWare Touched! - 6/10

Brief

Warioware Touched is essentially a continuation of the Warioware Micro Minigames that landed on the GBA, and continues the Wii's Smooth Moves inventiveness by using Nintendo's new hardware to it's (almost) full potential.

Gameplay

Touched! does to the DS what Smooth Moves did to the Wii. It uses the new Nintendo hardware in ways that no other console has before, all in the while making it fun.

Essentially, Touched! places groups of microgames together in sets, and it's up to you to solve the microgame in under 3-5 seconds to progess to the next puzzle. Each group contains roughly 13-20 microgames, and when you complete a group, a new group set is opened for playing.

Each group set is based on a theme, be it "drag and drop", draw lines, or tap the touch screen. But it's not just the touch screen that gets a workout, some puzzles require you to blow into the microphone to solve the puzzle.

It seems that nearly every aspect of the DS has been used in this game, but not the WIFI. Why Nintendo didn't implement this I'm not sure, as playing microgames against each other like in Smooth Moves is where the fun really starts. A lesson for the sequel perhaps?

Graphics

Previous Warioware players would know that you can't really grade the graphics on these games. Although some microgames look very pretty in 3D, some are cut scenes from older Nintendo games like Mario Bros and Zelda II, and are supposed to look retro. This is a nice surprise when you play the microgames.

Sound

Not anything to write home about, but the soundtrack plays well into the game. As you progress through each game, it's gets faster and the soundtrack does as well. This in turn gets the user focused more at the task. It's does it job, but it's not a soundtrack you'd be listening to on a iPod.

Replay Value

There really isn't any. You can finish the game in no time at all, and unlock everything in about 4-6 hours. You could spend sometime unlocking all 180 microgames, but once you've played them once, there's no urge to do it again. What's the point of trying to get the high score when generally only 1 person uses a single DS. This is where the WIFI should really have been added to the game.

Sour point

This has to be noted as it is the most frustrating part of the game, and it's made it's way to Smooth Moves to boot.

When you select a group of Microgames, you are tortured into reading and listen through a storyline of one the Warioware characters. These tend to be overly long, and worst of all, you can't skip through it the first time. Evil, evil, evil. Always give the consumer a choice of wanting to read non-relevant and boring side stories

Summary

This is a nice game to take with you a long and boring car trip, or a return flight somewhere. It uses most of the DS hardware features and it does have a certain level of addictiveness to it. But the storylines get frustrating and it's way too short. Try before you buy, or grab a 2nd hand copy.
